Teena Brandon struggles with a sexual identity crisis in homophobic, middle-of-nowhere, Nebraska. He finds love, acceptance, and a family for a fleeting moment before his lies catch up to him and his whole world comes crashing down around him.
Other than the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender appeal of the movie, Christine Vachon was drawn to the project by writer Kimberly Peirce's passion for the film. She researched the true story of Brandon Teena for five years while she wrote the script. Hilary Swank, who gave a breakthrough performance, depicted Brandon as being undeniably lovable and enormously vulnerable as he struggles to find his identity in a dangerously unaccepting world. The film was received extremely well, yielding an academy award nomination for both Hilary Swank and Chloe Sevigny. Christine Vachon described the film as being a rare occurance; a film enjoyed by gays, transexuals, and heterosexuals combined. I thoroughly enjoyed the film and will recommend it to anyone interested in seeing a great flick!
